The Oil trading dictionary for all people with an interest in the Oil Business The Oil Traders' Word(s) - Oil Trading Jargon Defintions explained straight from practise, real trader's words and wisdom.

Stefan van Woenzel opens up the Oilman’s world to all and sundry with The Oil Traders' Word(s), a book on the oil trade’s jargon. No ordinary book of definitions, it exemplifies the spirit of stoicism and the laconic way the sometimes insurmountable problems in the oil trade are met. There is a drop of good humor thrown in to ease their way into this most vital profession. Nowhere else is the virtue of strength in the face of natural adversity more in use than in the Oilman’s work. Nowhere else will all interested readers find the keys of trade secrets written with a subtle adventurer’s spirit and a humble, hardworking man’s well-deserved pride of place. Entirely illuminating, it is also a welcoming, and welcome, work that deserves attention beyond its closed world of quiet, heroic men.

Book Review in Oxford Prospect

Book review: OilHolicssynonymous

Why this book and what is it about.

Stavanger, August 2012. With 25 years of experience at the commercial and logistic side of the oil business Stefan van Woenzel, who works for Statoil ASA in Norway, has written a book. This is an educational book which can be recommended to all people with a job which is related to the oil business. That can be functions in sales, purchasing, trading, operations, back office positions, refining, wholesales, inspection, brokerage, up-stream activity, banking, logistics or other services which are related to the oil business.

The book is a guide or a dictionary written straight from practice. It describes the definitions and business jargon used by the oil traders and operators. The definitions are related to the physical trade, paper trade, risk management, logistics, refining, blending and HSE, dealing with oil. In the back of the book you would find typical expressions and sayings which are used in the oil industry. Also a list of conversion calculations which are related to oil trading and logistics are available in this book.

Understanding the oil language will help improving the quality of communication and the performance at work.

On the cover the author says the following: “When I started in the oil business such book did not exist. I had to learn it from practice. This book is to help each person working in the oil business and each person with an interest in oil activity. Let’s go one level up. This book has to be on your desk or device when you are linked to the commercial side of the oil business.”

The result of collecting the Oil Trading Terms is what you find in my book, "The Oil Traders' Word(s)".

Something about the Author

Stefan van Woenzel, Dutchman, 100% Rotterdam origin, born in 1967. I started working in 1989 in oil storage at Van Ommeren (Vopak) and learned to “think oil”. With 10 years of oil logistics experience in Rotterdam I moved with my family in 1999 to Norway to work for Statoil. There I traded; 7 years, gasoline as value chain trader; 3 years, heavy fuel oil on a global basis, 2 years, sour crude oil trading and today I work in Crude trading business development or origination. I collected most trading words in a file for many years and created this book as being a hobbyist and as a dedicated trader in the oil business.

The halcyon days of drilling for oil in the North Sea is in this refreshingly open work on the oil trade’s jargon. Technically a book of definitions, it nonetheless sparks deep intellectual interest with the wholly work-defined world that has all the authentic accoutrements of the oilman. Laconic. Stoic. Graced by a humane drop of humor, it is a remarkable book on one of the world’s most closed, clubby professions.
